Attracted by the Title ‘Doctor’? Your Scholarly Journey Could Begin Here.

Have you ever wondered what it takes to earn the title of Doctor? Is it merely an academic qualification, or could it be an opportunity to explore something you have always been curious about, challenge your own thinking, and create knowledge?

If you are an experienced working professional, with years of exposure to a particular industry, function, or domain, you may already have something valuable to bring to the world of scholarship. You have observed situations, dealt with challenges, formed opinions, and perhaps developed your own explanations for why things happen the way they do.

Have you ever considered exploring these experiences more deeply?

Your scholarly journey could begin with a simple question: What is that one phenomenon that has consistently intrigued you?

It could be something you have observed in your organisation, an interesting behavioural pattern, a recurring business challenge, an unexpected outcome, or a transformation taking place in your industry. It need not be a grand idea or a fully developed research problem. It simply needs to be something that genuinely interests you.

The next step is to ask yourself: What is my own understanding of this phenomenon?

What do you believe is happening? Why do you think it happens? What experiences have shaped your understanding? What might others be overlooking?

Articulating the phenomenon and your personal theory about it is an excellent starting point. You are not expected to have all the answers. In fact, discovering what you do not know is an important part of the journey.

A doctoral journey takes this initial curiosity further. It introduces you to existing scholarship, theoretical perspectives, research methodologies, and the discipline of examining your assumptions through evidence. Your personal explanations are questioned, refined, challenged, and developed through academic rigour. This is how an interesting observation can evolve into a research inquiry and, potentially, a meaningful contribution to knowledge.

You do not have to figure out the entire journey today.

Explore the perspectives, articles, books, and research papers on Scholarly Yours. Engage with ideas, discover possibilities, and gradually identify a direction that resonates with your experience and aspirations.

Your professional experience is your starting point. Your curiosity is your motivation. Scholarship is the journey. Knowledge creation is the possibility.

And perhaps your first step is simply to begin asking better questions.
